When Virginia Beach Fire Chief Steve Cover reflects on the trajectory of his career, which began as a volunteer firefighter in 1977, he sees a mixture of luck, timing and hard work. Council Members Not Thrilled About Proposed Pay Cut
A proposed pay cut for City Council members was not met with overwhelming joy, says Councilman Bill DeSteph , author of the move. "Four or five folks were pretty upset about it," DeSteph said in a Feb. 19 telephone interview. The issue has yet to be discussed, but should be part of upcoming city budget preparations, he said.

ONANCOCK - Edna Miles Onley, 100, wife of the late Franklin Reide Onley and a resident of The Hermitage on the Eastern Shore in Onancock, formerly of Sarasota, Fla., and Temperanceville, Va., passed away Feb. 23, 2009, at her residence. Born July 31, 1908, in Broadwater, Hog Island, Va., Mrs. Onley was the daughter of the late William Miles and Bertha Sharpley Miles.
