Historical Irony in Firm's Bailout

THERE WAS a real irony in the recent intervention by the Federal Reserve System to provide the money that enabled the firm of JPMorgan Chase to buy Bear Stearns before it went bankrupt. The point was to try to prevent a domino effect of panic in the financial markets that could lead to a downturn in the economy. The irony is that it was almost exactly a hundred years ago - 1907, to be exact - that the original J.P. Morgan arranged a bailout of a troubled financial institution for the same pur...

Fantasy Propels Carrier Proposals

The Navy might decide one day that it's a good idea to duplicate its Norfolk facilities in Jacksonville, Fla., providing the fleet with another nuclear-ready port on the East Coast. That day will come when the military has so much money that it can afford to spend $400 million on services it doesn't need. The arguments for a nuclear facility at Mayport are both multiple and meaningless. It would, goes the primary argument, provide the Navy with redundancy in case of attack. But any enemy stro...

State Prison Budget Mimics a Shell Game

The bean counters at the state Department of Corrections need to brush up on their math skills. They've agreed to rent cells for 300 Wyoming criminals for $18.5 million over the next two years and are soliciting for up to 700 more.

By B.J. PENN AS THE NAVY prepares to initiate an environmental impact statement on five potential sites for an outlying landing field, it's essential to inform the public about why the Navy requires an additional OLF to support "field carrier landing practice" and why this new facility is vital to national security. Three of the sites are in Virginia, and two are in North Carolina.

New Rating System for Black Holes

THE WOES OF the world have been so multitudinous lately that it's hard to give them all proper attention. You start fretting about the collapse of the housing market. Then you wander off into melting glaciers or large cranes collapsing at urban construction sites. And before you know it, the day is over. And now it turns out that there's a giant particle accelerator in Switzerland that critics say could create a black hole that would swallow up the Earth. (Or, in a more optimistic scenario, t...

Flawed Study, Story On Graduation Rates

A RECENT ARTICLE in The Virginian-Pilot, "Study suggests Beach overstated its graduation rate" (Hampton Roads, April 1), greatly misrepresented Virginia Beach City Public Schools. The headline itself implied that the school division arbitrarily determined and perhaps purposely inflated the graduation rate reported to the Virginia Department of Education. This could not be further from the truth.
