Mccain Beat Back Religious Right

By ROBERT D. STACEY EVEN IN DEFEAT, Sen. John McCain changed the American political landscape. He has broken the Religious Right's grip on the Republican Party.

Nothing but a Newspaper Can Preserve Such a Historic Day

When American history was made Tuesday , the much-maligned media responded. No sooner was Barack Obama elected the first black president of the United States than newspapers around the country fired up their presses and cranked out millions of extra copies.

Tears of Joy, Wonder As History Is Made 2 0 0 8

The moment Barack Obama was declared the winner of the presidential election, hundreds of people at The Westin hotel in Town Center exploded into cheers, tears and chants of "Yes, we can!" Revelers, most of them young voters, jumped, danced and hugged one another as CNN's Wolf Blitzer confirmed the results on the large screens in the lobby.

With Obama, Echoes of Lbj

WE TEND TO forget this part: "I speak tonight for the dignity of man and the destiny of democracy." That was how President Lyndon Johnson began the speech to Congress that is remembered most for his stunning, stirring invocation about halfway through of the civil rights movement's anthem, "We Shall Overcome." Johnson was speaking in support of what would, after fierce political labor, become the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

A Long War Ended

AND SO IT came to pass that on Nov. 4, 2008, shortly after 10 p.m. Eastern time, the American Civil War ended, as a black man - Barack Hussein Obama - won enough electoral votes to become president of the United States. A Civil War that in many ways was decided by the battle in Gettysburg, Pa., in 1863 concluded 145 years later via a ballot box in the same state. Pragmatism Wins in Local Elections

By Wednesday, Virginia's simple preference for practical politicians was on display in results from the top of the ballot to the bottom. In Virginia Beach and Suffolk, for example, local politicians known for solving problems - or at least not being part of them - were rewarded with victories that add up to a call for change.

5 Cities at a Glance

CHESAPEAKE | The Chesapeake School Board will hold a public hearing on a proposed capital improvement plan tonight . If approved, the plan would push back the construction of several new schools, including a high school slated for the Elbow Road area, in favor of maintenance on older schools. Board members say the weak economy makes it a good time to delay major projects, but several parents have spoken out against the proposal, saying the city's overcrowded schools need relief sooner.
