It's the other (bad) drivers Anyone who believes that trucks are the cause of the daily traffic woes at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel or the Downtown, and Midtown tunnels is deluding himself.

Union Mission Stalwart to Be Honored for Life's Work

If he had his druthers, the Rev. Ted Bashford wouldn't be the guest of honor at an event next week. He'd just skip the testimonials, video presentation and reception marking his half- century at the helm of the Union Mission Ministries. "It was not my idea," Bashford, humble as ever, said in an interview Thursday about the Sept. 15 event at First Baptist Church of Norfolk.

Both have come back to haunt the Beach now, severely complicating its ambition to remake the center of the city using the lessons learned at Town Center. Hits and Misses

Hit: An idea worth repeating There's far too little bipartisan cooperation in Richmond these days. So, it was refreshing to read that Gov. Kaine asked one of his leading Republican tormentors, Beach Del. Leo Wardrup, to interview the three finalists for VDOT boss. Wardrup called the winner, David Ekern of Idaho, an "idea man." That bodes well for the future.

More Housecleaning Needed by New Sheriff

It is hard to believe in the year 2006, that a local sheriff's office would need a commonwealth's attorney to step in with the reminder that slavery is illegal. But exactly that twisted sort of culture has been allowed to fester in the Portsmouth sheriff's office for too long. On Thursday, former Sheriff Gary Waters and former auxiliary Deputy Matthew Ejma were both indicted by a grand jury for using prisoners as free labor to enrich themselves. A handful of misdemeanor indictments against a ...

Letters to the Editor - the Virginian Pilot

Science, not politics, for King William Reservoir The decision by the State Water Control Board in Richmond to deny Newport News a permit extension for its proposed King William Reservoir (news, Sept. 7) represents a welcome bureaucratic check on a locality that has gotten away with far too much in the almost 20 years it has been fighting for this ill-conceived water plan.
