NORFOLK - Daisy M. (Christie) Ligon, 89, died peacefully in her room at Province Place of DePaul on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Capt. Warren B. Christie and Cmdr. Henry W. Ligon; her son, Graham M. Christie; and her great-grandson, Chase M. Christie.
VIRGINIA BEACH - Beth Alyson Bacon-Williams, 39, passed away Jan. 7, 2006, in Virginia Beach. She was a native of Kankakee, Ill., and attended Spring Branch Community Church. She was very active in supporting breast cancer research and fundraising. She enjoyed assistant coaching the girls basketball team at Cox High School.
ELIZABETH CITY - Milton Neal Council Sr., 83, of Morgans Corner Road, died Jan. 6, 2006. A native of Bolton, N.C., he was a son of the late Mary Rebecca Partridge and Milton C. Council. He retired as a lead man for the Tidewater Construction Company. He was predeceased by his wife, Marian E. Parker Council and three sisters.
PENDLETON - Elizabeth V. Harris Outland, 89, of the 1300 block of Vaughan Creek Road, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Outland was born April 29, 1916, and raised in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Ronald Earl and Elnora Midgett Harris. She was a member of Severn Baptist Church and was secretary for Westhaven Baptist Church for 14 years and a homemaker.
FAYETTEVILLE - Joan Mauldin Ellis, 63, of the 1800 block of Glenwick Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She was a 1961 graduate of Dunn High School and retired from Social Security after 40 years of service. Survivors include her husband, Willie E. VIRGINIA BEACH - Cmdr. Robert Frank Atherton, U.S. Navy retired, flew his last mission and joined his bride Jan. 6, 2006. A native of Marengo, Ill., he was the husband of the late Nancy S. Atherton. Mr. Atherton enlisted in the Navy in 1952 as an aviation mechanic. He was commissioned as an officer in 1953. Mr. Atherton was a Navy pilot starting his career flying Corsairs.
