Martin Paul Beickert Jr., 70, of the 100 block of Walnut Drive, died July 1, 2004, at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mr. Beickert, a native of Queens, N.Y., was the husband of Georgia Matthews Howell Beickert of the residence and the son of the late Martin Paul Beickert Sr. and Evelyn Bidwell Beickert. Philip Winston Churchill, 54, died June 30, 2004. He was born Dec. 20, 1949, in Guam and was an industrial welder. Mr. Churchill was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Vietnam. He is survived by daughters, Jennifer Churchill and Nikole Churchill; a son, Stefano Churchill, all of Virginia Beach and Hawaii; sisters, Jean Thomas of San Diego, Barbara Oliver of Vacaville, Calif., and Laura Alworth of Del Mar.

Janet Paris Stone

Janet Paris Stone, 72, of the 3600 block of Fortune Lane, passed away July 1, 2004, in Obici Hospital. A native of Lynchburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late James Manson Paris and Iva Tuck Midgett and the widow of Joe D. Stone. She was the owner and president of Janets Office Supplies and Machines Inc. She was a member of Western Branch Baptist Church and one of the first women members of the Portsmouth Lions Club.

Johnny J. Mitchell

Johnny Joe Mitchell, 59, of Bamberg Place, passed away at his residence June 29, 2004. Mr. Mitchell was born in Sharlow, W.Va., Dec. 20, 1944. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving two tours in Vietnam. He was also a coal miner and was self employed in the home construction industry for the last 24 years. Elsie Hopfinger Suthers, 84, of the 100 block of Stalham Road, passed away July 1, 2004, in Chesapeake General Hospital. A native of Attica, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Esther Hopfinger and the widow of Harold Francis Suthers. She was a retired registered nurse. She was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church and a graduate of the Buffalo Deaconess School of Nursing, Buffalo, N.Y.

Ronald Alvin Meyer, 66, died July 1, 2004, at the Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia. He was the son of the late Robert Meyer and Estelle Warshel Meyer. Mr. Meyer was a member of Temple Israel in Norfolk. Survivors include his sister, Joan F. Meyer of Falls Church, Va., and two cousins, Ann Copeland and Linda Cogan, both of Virginia Beach.

William D. Rowell

William Darden Rowell, a lifelong resident of Greensville County and Emporia, passed away July 1, 2004. Born July 26, 1918, he was the youngest son of the late Thomas Joseph Rowell and Lucy Turner Rowell. He was also predeceased by his wife, Nellie Newsome Rowell and an infant son. Sandra M. Charette, 83, of Camelot Drive, passed away July 1, 2004, in a local hospital. Born in Lawrence, Mass., Sandra is survived by her daughter, Lynne Sullivan and husband John of Virginia Beach; son, Richard Charette of Haverhill, Mass.; brother, Alfred Torrisi and wife Theresa of Lawrence; and a grandson, James Saunders.

Robert Paul Butler

Robert Paul Butler, 40, died June 29, 2004. He was the son of Dan and Donna Parker of Virginia Beach. Mr. Butler was a native of Lexington Park, Md. and was a carpenter. Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Stephanie Lee Parker of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Jeffrey Steven Butler and his wife Susanne of Chesapeake and Dennis Michael Butler and his fiancee Ragan of Chesapeake; and four nieces. He was predeceased by a brother, Shawn Richard Butler.

Harriet M. Jeter

Harriet Maude Jeter, 86, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on July 1, 2004. A lifetime resident of Virginia Beach, Mrs. Jeter loved reading, fishing and gardening. Mrs. Jeter was preceded in death by her first beloved husband, Thurman Madison Gardner of 25 years and more recently by her second husband, Charles G. Jeter.

Betty W. Winstead

Betty W. Winstead, 67, died unexpectedly, but peacefully, after a short illness with the love of her family, friends and the grace of God, on June 29, 2004. She was a native and lifelong resident of Williamsburg. She was a member of Bruton Parish Church.

Drevvus Ann Ashby

Drevvus Ann Ashby, 74, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family July 1, 2004. Born Jan. 15, 1930, in Grove, Okla., she resided in Albuquerque, N.M., where she met and married Ed and raised their son, Charles. She was co-owner and manager of TESCO Electric. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward E. Ashby and her mother, Mildred V. Lundy. Survivors include her son, Charles G. Ashby and wife Carol Ashby and her grandson, Guy Charles Ashby, all of Chesapeake.

Johnnie M. Monroe

WINSTON-SALEM - Johnnie Lindon Morris Monroe died peacefully at her home surrounded by family June 30, 2004. The youngest of nine children, she was born April 5, 1911, in Granite Quarry, N.C., to Louella Isabella Russell Morris. She proudly bore the name of her father, John Lindon Morris, who died nearly three months before her birth.
