Earnest J. Gwathney Sr.

Earnest Jacob "Hank" Gwathney Sr., 86, of the 2800 block of Breeze Ave., passed on quietly and peacefully into eternal rest on March 28, 2004, at Maryview Medical Center. Born in Norfolk County, Va., he was employed at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, for more than 40 years. He was an avid lover of wildlife and nature.

Clarence J. Mudge Jr.

Clarence James "Jim" Mudge Jr., 57, of the 1500 block of James Landing, passed away March 30, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer at home with his family by his side. Born in Elyria, Ohio, he was the son of Clarence J. Mudge Sr. and the late Elsie K. Mudge. A 1964 graduate of Granby High School in Norfolk, Jim then joined the Air Force until 1968. Myrtle Barnes

Myrtle Barnes, 85, of Burlington, Vt., died March 22, 2004. Born in Nashville, N.C., she was a graduate of Hicks Beauty Academy in Norfolk and moved to Burlington in 1958 where she resided until her death. Surviving are a brother, Walter J. Morgan and his wife Marie of Corapeake; three nieces; three nephews; and many devoted friends.

Margaret Rea Blanchard

Margaret Rea Blanchard, 76, of the 1500 block of Berkley Ave., departed this life March 30, 2004. She was employed with Peoples Drug store for more than 10 years until her retirement and she was a member of Solid Rock COGIC. She is survived by her husband, John H. Blanchard; daughter, Ruth Newkirk and husband Willie; brother, Junious Merritt and wife Grace, all of Teachey, N.C.; four grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Katharine G. Barnhart

Katharine "Katy" G. Barnhart of Oak Hill peacefully won her 28- year battle against Multiple Sclerosis by entering the Gates of Heaven on Sunday, March 28, 2004, surrounded by her family. Edward S. Willis

Edward Shaw Willis, 76, of the 100 block of Smith Ave., died March 30, 2004, at his residence. A native of Sumter, S.C., he was the widower of Esther Louise Jenkins Willis. Mr. Willis was retired from WAVY-TV as a maintenance engineer after 41 years and was a member of Central Baptist Church where he was also a deacon. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.
