Avoid Micromanaging

Budget Vote April 12

The areas rated were circulation, visits, program attendance, and public Internet terminal use.

Fines

Possibly as a result of the public's preoccupation with fines when they think about libraries, library directors, it seems to me, are often fiddling around with fines, often to the detriment of the total collected.

From Digital to Print

[...] sadly, bookstore shelf space is shrinking, and because of economic necessity bookstores tend to favor the new and the bestselling.

From the Editor

According to a news release attached to Janet Nelson's e-mail, "DEMCO is a subsidiary of Wall Family Enterprise, a family-owned business including five other library and education-focused companies based in the United States and United Kingdom." Enough was enough. [...] said the Lord.

Iphone Compatible E-Books and Audiobooks

It's Different in Ohio

(See news section.) In the face of drastically reduced state support, a long tradition in Ohio, Tiffin-Seneca passed a local levy to replace the lost state funds.

Legos at the Library

According to a recent study by Dorothy Singer of Yale University called Play = Learning, promoting play contributes to early literacy development by increasing attention span, memory, creativity, and language and vocabulary skills.

Lots of Money

Editor Usually fine money is stolen in smaller amounts from libraries, with the big money going out of the library's coffers through the hands of a bookkeeper or finance guy.

New Way to Check Out E-Books

Fines or late fees are nonexistent because digital access to the books expires on a set due date, at which point titles lock up and users are prompted to delete the titles. Part of the selection problem, of course, is that many libraries are new to the e-book borrowing experience and are in the midst of building up digital collections. Since availability is a problem, it would make sense that users could view books by seeing just those books that are available for borrowing.

Ny Woman Accused of Looting Overdue Library Fines

Open-Source

[...] it seems to me that the greatest cost over the years you have for an ILS system is maintenence and upgrading with both software and equipment. [...] getting something "free" is very attractive to many of us. [...] we realize that nothing is free and what really keeps costs down and quality up is competition.

Patrons Vexed by Glitches

Staffers use it to buy and catalog books and to send them from one library to another. Since the new software went into operation, the library system's technical staff has received more than 7,000 e-mails from patrons and staff members.

Raising Funds to Pay Library Fines

The Library Blooms Again

[...] 2010 is over and behind us. [...] during 201 1 , T-SPL plans to upgrade technology and computer systems, purchase a scanner for public use and hire a head of adult services, a position which was left unfilled when Karen CuIp was named director.

What's Ahead in 2011?

What's Freegal?

With your card, you can now access over fifty labels and thousands of songs from Sony's music catalog through BCPL's new subscription to a music service called Freegal.

Wipe the Slate Clean

By wiping the slate clean as we begin a new year, customers who have not been able to borrow books, CDs, and DVDs, or use the public computers will have access to all of the free resources the library has available.
