Making The Paper

Jesse On the Dinosaurs

I was scared at first," 3-1/2- year-old Jesse Lueders reports of his visit to "Dinomight," a fundraiser exhibit sponsored by the Madison Children's Museum, "and then I hided behind Dad. 'Cept then I wasn't scared. Because the dinosaurs were just machines!

My alternative: Make Eastwood the through street in both directions, installing turn lanes and islands and whatnot at intersections. Add some kind of ped/bike crossing in the middle with an island and controls. Close off the goofy connections on the end and rebuild the Division and First Street intersections.

Dancin' in the Streets

As we wrap up summer with the last issue of August (though autumn doesn't officially begin until 4:18 p.m. on Sept. 22), we have one last celebration before the frost falls. It's been our custom the past few years to introduce the Annual Manual and the Madison's Favorites choices at a block party on East Main Street. This year we've moved the party a week later and one block over. We invite you to attend the first King Street Block Party on Saturday, Aug. 29, 3 p.m.-midnight.

Coconate's hot dog cart, coconates.com: I can't see much for the Chicago purist to object to: The relish is nuclear, the mustard yellow, the ketchup absent, the bun poppyseeded, the wurst ìtseìf a plump Vienna model, and not overboiled. The best parts of the Chicago style here are Coconate's fresh tomato wedges and the great, oversized dill pickle spear.

Indecent Burial

I've felt guilty ever since. Every time I clean his room, I see the ice cream bucket on a shelf or on his desk, with Boots' collar around the handle. Whenever I see it, it reminds me of how I lied to my son, and I feel terrible. I have to do something. Should I admit that I lied to him? Will he understand that I only did what I thought was right? Or should I just get rid of the ashes and hope he doesn't notice?
