Voters Reject 1a; Approve 1d; Keep Incumbents in Colorado

Voters overwhelmingly rejected ballot initiative 1A, the so- called JOBS initiative, which would have extended a 0.665 general property mill levy tax, which was scheduled to expire Dec. 31. The money would have been used for creating, attracting and retaining primary jobs, and marketing and promoting Colorado Springs.

Defense Contractors in Colorado Springs Wait and See Mode

Changes to the Defense Department budget proposed this week by Secretary Robert Gates could affect the 100 or so contractors with a Colorado Springs presence. Budget reallocatoin also might impact the city's largest defense contractor landlord, Maryland-based Corporate Office Properties Trust, which controls more than 1 million square feet of office space.

Health Care Accidents in Colorado Cost $6.9 Billion

Golden-based Health Grades only awarded one Colorado hospital with its coveted patient safety excellence award. Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins earned the award for 2009 as one of only 242 hospitals nationwide that met patient safety criteria among Medicare patients among 5,000 hospitals in the United States.

Beer Industry Boosts U.S. Economy

Colorado's beer industry brings $13.7 billion to the state's economy and accounts for $1.2 million in federal, state and local taxes. That's the word from the National Beer Wholesalers Association and the Beer Institute, which also said that the industry provides 69,518 jobs.

Despite Tech Job Cuts in Colorado Springs- It's Not As Bad As It Used to Be

First quarter technology job cuts were nearly five times higher than the 17,345 cuts announced last year during the same period. Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. released a report today stating that planned job cuts in the United States tech sector totaled 84,217, up 27 percent from 66,312 during the previous quarter.
