Director's Corner

I am often asked whether what's happening today is reminiscent of the 1930s and 1940s. I am careful to say that that was a unique period of evil and consequences of anti-Semitism. But if there is one element of today's world that has the potential of such consequence for the Jewish people, it is that combination of the themes that Jews are the evil, hidden power together with Iran's building nuclear weapons. It is said that it would be irrational for Iran to use nuclear weapons against Israel...

Q&Amp;A: The Facts About Iran

A: The U.N. Security Council unanimously voted to impose sanctions on Iran in December 2006. The sanctions, which were passed as Resolution 1737, ban the supply of nuclear-related materials and technology to Iran and freeze the assets of individuals and companies with links to Iran's nuclear program. The Security Council proceeded to tighten its sanctions on Iran in March 2007 due to Iran's failure to respond to Resolution 1737. The resulting Resolution 1747 extended the U.N.'s initial set of...

Foxman] shared his Holocaust experiences in front of a filled-to-capacity crowd containing a mix of American educators, Jewish...

Saltman Center Brings Israelis and Arabs On the Same Court

"It's more than just about basketball and hanging out together," said Phyllis Gerably, Managing Director of ADL's Israel Office. "It's about meeting as equals and breaking down walls of prejudice and intolerance. Streetball and ADL's expertise in stereotype-reduction education is a winning combination to accept 'the other.'" Streetball Hafla was made possible by Michael and Sonja Saltman and the Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution.

Extremists Inflame Immigration Debate

ADL provided a two-hour presentation on "Extremism in the Anti-Immigration Movement" to a group of about 100 Arizona state legislators and members of the media and public at the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix on March 13.

Rebuilding a Church - Together

The First United Methodist Church was acknowledged as a No Place for Hate® community this year, in part for their efforts in rebuilding a house of worship destroyed by arson. Each year a number of houses of worship are targets of hate crimes, and for more than a decade, a team from Santa Barbara made up of members from First United Methodist Church and Congregation B'nai B'rith have worked together to help rebuild a damaged church.

Adl Campaign Galvanizes Protest Against British Unions' Israel Boycott

When, in the late spring, Britain's National Union of Journalists (NUJ) called for a boycott of Israeli goods and services to punish Israel for "the savage pre-planned attack on Lebanon" and "the slaughter of civilians in Gaza," and the University College Union (UCU) called for support for an academic boycott because of "the complicity of Israeli academia in the occupation," ADL decided to spearhead action. Its objective: to convince opinion leaders and decision makers around the world that t...

New Adl Polls: Anti-Semitism On Rise in Europe

"Millions of Europeans continue to accept a wide range of traditional anti-Semitic stereotypes and conspiracy theories, including the charge that Jews are more loyal to Israel than to their home country," according to ADL. "Despite the fact that individual governments and the European Union have condemned anti-Semitism and sought ways to counteract it, these attitudes die hard and help incite and legitimize anti-Semitic acts, including violence against Jews."

Shaping Adl's Next Generation

Over the years, the conference has produced many ADL leaders, including National Chair Glen S. Lewy, who was particularly influenced by attending this Washington meeting many years ago. "To see the issues in which ADL is involved, to see the respect in which ADL is held and to be with people who are similarly situated is truly a transitional event," Mr. Lewy said.

Going Up to the Hill

Hundreds of ADL citizen-lobbyists took their message to Capitol Hill and urged over 80 Members of Congress to support Israel, enact hate-crime legislation, and pass fair and humane immigration reform. Education

Toward Catholic Understanding

Over the summer, 26 Catholic-school teachers who had taken ADL's basic Bearing Witness(TM) course in the United States, went to Israel for the Bearing Witness Advanced(TM) course. "We take our participants to Israel because of the land's historical significance and contemporary meaning," says ADL Interim Director of Education Ed Alster. "While gaining an understanding of the Jewish connection to the land, these Catholic educators learn about their own history, as well."

Interfaith

The Vatican Restores an Offensive Prayer

In July, Pope Benedict XVI sanctioned the wider use of the 16th century Tridentine or Latin Mass to Catholic services around the world. The change alarmed ADL because the mass includes a Good Friday prayer calling for the conversion of Jews and their deliverance from "blindness" and "darkness." ADL termed the Pope's decision "a theological setback in the religious life of Catholics and a body blow to Catholic-Jewish relations, after 40 years of progress between the Church and the Jewish peopl...

Hispanics Learn Security Measures From Adl

The debate over immigration reform has led to hateful rhetoric and threats of violence against America's Latino population. Hispanic activists sought to better understand these forces, enhance the security of their organizations and protect pro-immigrant advocates at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), which was held in Miami Beach in July.

No Nuclear Iran!

ADL kicked off this initiative, called No Nuclear Iran(TM), in September with a push to mobilize the Jewish community. It distributed posters nationally to thousands of synagogues, Jewish institutions and Hillels, and sent messages to rabbis for use in their High Holiday sermons. That effort was immediately followed by a series of print ads for the Jewish, American and international media that said "No Nuclear Iran. A nuclear-armed Iran is a clear and present threat to Israel, America and the...

Adl Exposes Violent Extremism

ADL's critical work in exposing extremism has been enhanced by an expansion and reorganization conducted over the past year. "ADL has been investigating and exposing extremist groups and individuals since our founding, and we expanded our work in this area significantly in the mid-1990s," says Civil Rights Director Deborah Lauter. "Then, after 9/11, we found that law enforcement was increasingly asking for our help. I wanted to restructure our division to foster better communication and more ...
