Evansville Losing More Plant Jobs Collis Closing Maxx Road Site, Cutting 160 Jobs

Collis Inc., a company that builds appliance shelving for Whirlpool, will close its Evansville plant by the end of March, the company announced Monday. About 160 jobs will be eliminated. The closing will begin this month, the company said.

Evsc to Repay $423,457 in Fees

In the next few days, Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corp. coffers will be $423,457 lighter. That's the total amount in refunds the EVSC will send to families that paid $20-per-student fees to the corporation in 2002-03 and 2003-04.

Reversal of Traffic On Main Sought

A supplemental, abbreviated Downtown traffic-flow survey, made available Monday, is seeking additional input on a proposal to reverse the direction of travel on Main Street. "We didn't connect the Fulton gateway to the changes we're talking about on Main Street," said Downtown Evansville Inc. President Mick Conati, explaining what he and others see as a flaw in a comprehensive Downtown traffic survey conducted last summer. More than 1,200 people responded.

The immediate future for fire-damaged Good Shepherd School is coming into clearer focus, but long-term plans remain, well, smoky. Classes will resume Wednesday for Good Shepherd's 345 students, who have been out of school since a fire the night of Dec. 5.

Dana Corp. Lays Off 84 Workers; More May Be Let Go

Dana Corp. reportedly laid off 84 hourly workers at its truck axle assembly plant last week in Henderson, with more feared to follow, the result of a weakening commercial truck business after years of booming sales. Officials of the company and United Steelworkers of America Local 9443 Unit 2, which represents the nearly 600 hourly workers, reportedly will meet Jan. 12 to discuss possible wage and benefit cuts in the labor contract.

High-Speed Wireless Arrives for Cell Phones

High-speed wireless access for cell phone users is becoming available in Evansville. Verizon Wireless announced Monday it will offer high-speed wireless service to cell phone customers in five Indiana cities, including Evansville. It already provides the service in Indianapolis, said Chris Stolarsky, a spokesman for Verizon.

Evsc Plans Summer Production of Musical `Forty-Second Street'

"Forty-Second Street," a story of hard work, good fortune, talent and love, will be the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corp. musical for summer 2007. Audition dates will be April 10-12. Rehearsal dates are May 30 through July 16.

Police Round Up 50 Minors, Adult in Weekend Parties

Fifty minors and one adult were arrested over the weekend in response to complaints about parties at a West Side apartment complex at which youths were alleged to be drinking alcohol. Officer Ron McDonald of the Indiana State Excise Police reported that residents of the Eagle Village apartment complex near the University of Southern Indiana made complaints Friday and Saturday about parties there.

Locust Creek Grant Money Avaliable

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has awarded the Vanderburgh County Soil and Water Conservation District a $30,000 Lake and River Enhancement grant for conservation and water quality enhancement projects. Norma Duckworth, water quality specialist, said the grant is a cost-share program that offers the potential for an additional $60,000 over the next three years.
