Ymca Needs Help for Its Half-Mile Marathon [Corrected 09/13/05]

When you've walked and jogged 10 miles and your feet are tired, your legs are achy and your mind is cloudy from fatigue, it's a good thing someone's there to make sure you don't get hit by a car. It's also great when someone is there to hand you a refreshing cup of water.

Hostettler: No to Storm Aid

In an overwhelming bipartisan action, Congress approved a $51.8 billion hurricane relief package Thursday, but 8th District Rep. John Hostettler was one of the few no votes. The Senate passed the measure 97-0 and the House vote was 410- 11. The bill, now headed to President Bush, includes $23.2 billion for housing aid and cash to storm victims. State and local governments are in line for $7.7 billion in reimbursement, and the measure includes $2,000 debit cards for families to use.

Former Library Sought As Site for Work On `Sensitive Cases' Police Plan `Advocacy Center'

The old North Park Branch Library could be converted into an "advocacy center" where police and prosecutors could question victims of child molestation and abuse in a non-threatening environment. The Evansville Police Department asked the Evansville- Vanderburgh Public Library board Thursday for use of the building, which could also be used by social service agencies.

Adam D. Miley apologized in court Thursday to the family of the man who was killed when Miley was driving drunk. Swiveling around in his courtroom chair to face the victim's mother, Miley told her: "I'm sorry."

Country music legend Dolly Parton will bring her 2005 tour to Evansville on Nov. 1. Parton's "Those Were the Days" tour will be at Roberts Stadium just a couple of weeks after the release of her newest CD.

`Second Helping' Returns Cape Reviving Program to Provide Extra Restaurant Food to Needy

The Community Action Program of Evansville is reinstating its "Second Helping" program that distributes leftover food from restaurants to local soup kitchens and shelters. The agency discontinued the program in December because of the condition of its delivery van, higher gas prices and a funding decrease.

Katrina Evacuees Here Tell of Struggles to Survive

Danni Cole and Philip Gomez said if they didn't have each other, they wouldn't have made it through Hurricane Katrina. "We weren't leaving without the other one," Cole said.

Willard Library's Budget Slashed

The Evansville Vanderburgh Library Board, with no discussion or public explanation, slashed the proposed Willard Library budget by nearly 20 percent. That vote is almost certain to be challenged in court, Willard attorney Keith VonDerahe said.

Now that the University of Southern Indiana has eclipsed 10,000 students for the second straight year, a committee is working on a long-range master plan that would accommodate twice as many students. One Saturday morning during a practice of the Old Dam Community Band in Newburgh, a couple of its members had a vision. The band was practicing at a house owned by the town and overlooking the Old Lock & Dam Park on the Ohio River. Tax Amnesty Plan to Begin Thursday Penalties, Interest Waived, but Hoosier Delinquents to Pay Double On Nov. 16

The Indiana Department of Revenue began mailing the first of 200,000 notices to delinquent taxpayers Wednesday to encourage them to take advantage of the upcoming amnesty program. Beginning Thursday and running for two months, people and businesses that have outstanding taxes due from the period before July 1, 2004, can pay up with the state and have their interest and penalties waved. But when the tax amnesty closes on Nov. 16, penalties will double.

Music Contest to Start Tonight in Princeton

Tony Rothrock is happy with the direction the Indiana State Picking and Fiddling Championships have taken since the event moved from June to September and from Pike County to Gibson County.
