Fetus-Rights Case to Be Heard in Iu Classroom

Every year, the Indiana Court of Appeals selects one compelling case to go "on the road" to Indiana University's Bloomington campus so law students can witness justice in action. This year, the justices have picked an Evansville case that deals with an emotionally charged and legally complex issue: That is, if a fetus is killed in an accident, was it ever really a child under Indiana law?

Old National Place to Open Soon, Plans Public Tour a Bank with a View

Motorists and pedestrians may be getting more curious by the day about what the panoramic view of Evansville is like from atop the new Old National Place high-rise on the city's riverfront. Soon they will be able to find out. The $52 million, high-tech banking center -- at the foot of Main Street Downtown and overlooking horseshoe bend of the Ohio River -- is scheduled to open for business Sept. 20.

Outcome of `Cyber-Squatting' Case Remains Secret for Now

Back in April, when Evansville's largest real estate company accused an aggressive competitor of pirating its Internet domain, it launched the first federal "cyber-squatting" lawsuit in the state. The case attracted attention, in part because the law applied in the case -- the Anticyberpiracy Consumer Protection Act -- is only a few years old and not widely known.

Our Jobs Not Done When Stadium Lights Turned Off

I can't count the times I've had to find my way out of a football or baseball stadium long after the field lights have been turned off and the entrances locked. It's a hazard that comes with the job of being a sports writer. Once the game is over and the fans and players are filing out of the stadium, the pressure is on for me. If I'm on the road, I take a laptop to the game with me and begin writing from the stadium as soon as I've finished interviewing players and coaches.

Daniels Makes His Case for Change Candidate for Governor Says Indiana Trails Many States in Key Areas

The federal budget deficit should have no impact on this year's campaign for Indiana governor, said Republican candidate Mitch Daniels, President Bush's former budget director. Daniels worked for Bush from January 2001 until last year. He said he gave the president choices which could have created a balanced budget.

Clerk Asks Where Did Surplus Items Go?

Vanderburgh County Clerk Marsha Abell wants to know why surplus computers that had been used by her office were given away by County Commissioners. Abell, who said she likely will discuss the issue today at a news conference, said she planned to sell some of her office's surplus computers to fund repairs and upgrades of machines in use.

Education Roundtable Sets Six Goals

The Mayor's Education Roundtable has tentatively decided to concentrate on six areas that it believes would most help education in Vanderburgh County. After a long brainstorming session Monday, the roundtable members said they want to focus on:

Theft Suspect Caught After Chase, Crash

Police have apprehended a man involved in a high-speed chase and wreck Monday morning on Evansville's East Side, but they are still searching for his female companion, who ran off with her hands cuffed. The man in custody was identified by police as Lamar Davis, 36. Police said Davis will face preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, a class D felony; resisting law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor; reckless driving; neglect of a dependent and hit and run.

Memorial Bricks to Be Installed at Kids Kingdom Next Month

Southeast Side resident Charles Smith was wondering Monday what happened to the memorial bricks he ordered, one of about 500 sponsored for the walkway at The Kids Kingdom in Evansville's Sunrise Park. "Yeah," admitted Evansville police officer Billy Bolin, coordinator of the project. "I've had a lot of people I know ask me, `Hey, when are you going to put those bricks in?'"

Neighbor Tolerated Horse, but Says Donkey Is Too Much

Hugh Ralph didn't like it when a horse appeared in the back yard of his neighbor's East Side home last year. But things got worse Sunday. Ralph was awakened by the braying of a donkey.

Jennings Calls Overtime Changes `Direct Attack On Middle Class'

Democratic congressional candidate Jon Jennings on Monday spoke out against new overtime pay regulations that he said will cost 8th District voters precious overtime dollars. Jennings, former Midwest collegiate scout for the Boston Celtics, called the removal of overtime regulations "a direct attack on middle-class families." Jennings is opposing Republican incumbent John Hostettler, and said Hostettler has not voted against such new rules.

The Lloyd Expressway at Fulton Avenue is now a no-turn zone. The state closed off left turns from the expressway onto Fulton for both westbound and eastbound traffic Monday.

Education Panel Member Feels Overwhelmed

A member of the Community Education Committee, having spent more than two hours hearing about the school system, pointed to the mass of material he'd been given and then asked a question. He thought he had been asked by Evansville-Vanderburgh school officials to serve on the committee "because you wanted information from us."

On the Verge of Achieving Greatness When Nature Calls

I have concluded that I will never achieve greatness in my profession. Every time I start to make a smidgen of headway, I have to get up and pee. It goes something like this:

Pileup Snarls Traffic On Lloyd at U.S. 41

One of Evansville's major traffic arteries was temporarily clogged Monday morning when a driver towing a boat tried to prevent an accident and got ensnared in a chain-reaction crash instead. The three-vehicle pileup (not counting the double-hulled boat) happened at 10:45 a.m. Monday on the westbound Lloyd Expressway, just east of the U.S. 41 interchange.
