Environmentalists Open Fire On Power Plants

A recent study based on an analysis commissioned by the Bush administration suggests that 24,000 people die in the United States each year from coal-fired power plant pollution. Environmentalists say that power plants place Indiana among the top five polluting states in the country.

Perfect Cup to Run Cafe in New Library

The Perfect Cup, the deli/coffee shop in the Old Farmer's Market, has been chosen to manage the cafe in the new Central Library. The restaurant's owners, who also operate the cafe at Oaklyn Branch Library, will lease the 700-square-foot space for 1 percent of gross sales each year. That is also the fee paid at Oaklyn.

Hogsett to Challenge Carter

Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Joe Hogsett will resign to challenge Republican incumbent Attorney General Steve Carter in November. And Indianapolis resident Susan Williams will run for superintendent of public instruction but will campaign on the pledge that if successful, she will immediately resign from the post to allow the governor-elect to appoint his choice.

Engineering, Architectural Firm Moving to Warrick County

Work will begin this summer to move the company offices of Morley & Associates Inc. from Downtown Evansville to Warrick County. The company provides civil engineering, land surveying, architectural and construction management services, is licensed to do business in 11 states and has about 50 employees.

Disaster Aid Sought for Vanderburgh, Warrick

Indiana now has officially requested federal disaster aid for tornado and flood victims in Warrick and Vanderburgh counties and officials want to hear from residents about damage. After the storms that hit the state May 30, Gov. Joe Kernan declared a state disaster and by June 2 requested a federal disaster declaration and relief for five counties, not including any in the Evansville area.

Four Bands to Perform at Bailey's This Month

This is going to be one mad, manic, musical summer in Evansville. J.T. Bailey's at Marina Pointe has an impressive lineup this month. "They're all routing dates," said manager Jeff McClarney. "The bands fell into our laps because Evansville's on the way to or from other cities. We jumped at the chance to get them here."

DINO Three years and $25 million in the making, the permanent Dinosphere exhibit opens Saturday at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, 3000 N. Meridian St. It blends science and fun by uncovering the history of dinosaurs with dramatic dinosaur scenes, actual bones and a 21-minute sound-and-light show that takes you from dawn to dusk in the dinosaur world.

Mesker Movies Begins Run at Amphitheater

SMG-Evansville's Mesker Movies begins this weekend at Mesker Amphitheatre. The one-weekend-a-month series runs from June through September; movies are selected about 10 days before they're shown. In most cases, the Friday film is a "date night" movie, while the Saturday movie has family appeal.

Antiques Dealers Gather in New Harmony

More than 60 antiques dealers from five states will gather Saturday and Sunday in the third annual Golden Raintree Antiques Show and Sale in New Harmony, Ind. The dealers will set up along Main Street and in the Old Gymnasium from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday.

Newburgh Gallery Features Artists From Chicago, Germany

Artists from Chicago and Germany will be featured in a new show opening with a public reception Saturday at Gallery 320 in Newburgh. The exhibition, which runs through the month, showcases photographs and graphics by April Bertler, a German who grew up in the United States, and varied media by Nick Butcher of Chicago.
