Local Church with Facilities in Haiti Wary of Future

The ouster of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide leaves an Evansville church with an uncertain future for the orphanage and the school it operates on the island. Bible Center Cathedral owns a 2,000-child school and a 30-boy orphanage in Petionville, a posh hillside neighborhood just outside the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. The influence of its neighbors -- legislators, justices and retired generals -- have kept the rebels away from the church's property.

Police Find Baby's Diaper Loaded with Crack Cocaine

An Indiana State Police trooper found an unexpected load in a baby's diaper -- a bag of crack cocaine with a street value of $140,000. The trooper made the discovery during a routine traffic stop last summer. As prosecutors prepare for a trial next week against a parent, the infant's father wants the evidence thrown out.

Bowling Strikes Family's Fancy, with Room to Spare

They categorize my college-age son as a legacy student, because he's attending the same college I did. He's even studying in the same department, learning things about journalism and design and computers they hadn't even imagined when I made my way through Ball State University 30 years ago. That legacy thing has been rolling around in my mind for a while, and it occurred to me over the weekend as I watched the high school bowling sectional that my younger son, a high school junior, is involv...

Doctors: 70% of Deaths in Area Called Avoidable

Doctors at Welborn Clinic want the community to know that most deaths in Vanderburgh County share something in common, and there are things we can do individually to reverse the trend. Welborn Clinic Chief Medical Officer Dr. Donald Lurye said 70 percent of all deaths locally can be prevented or delayed by controlling tobacco use, hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol and obesity.

All of Veterans Parkway May Reopen This Weekend

Drivers detoured from Veterans Memorial Parkway can plan a return to their normal route, with water officials expecting to reopen the road this weekend. Workers poured pavement on the road Tuesday morning, sealing off the hole dug to repair a 48-inch water main.

Henderson Woman Indicted in Death of 6-Year-Old Son

A Henderson County, Ky., grand jury indicted a Henderson woman on a murder charge Tuesday in connection with the January death of her 6-year-old son. Police said Christina Cutteridge, 32, of the 2800 block of Sunset Lane, is responsible for the injuries that led to her son's death.

Students Tune in to Primary Politics

For 17-year-old Jason Crowe, the only thing "super" about Super Tuesday was the free food while watching Democrats John Kerry and John Edwards battle it out at the polls. Crowe and other politically active students at the University of Southern Indiana joined members of the Political Science Society and College Democrats on Tuesday evening to watch the Democratic presidential nominee returns.

Deputies, Jailers Disciplined in Suicide

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department has disciplined deputies and civilian jailers as part of an investigation into the Jan. 26 suicide of inmate Rodney Freeman Wilson. Two Vanderburgh County Jail supervisory sergeants were suspended for two days and four civilian detention officers on duty at the time were suspended for three days without pay for failing to follow jail policy.

Police Seek Three Men in Woman's Abduction

Police interviewed a kidnap victim late Tuesday afternoon, attempting to sort out an early morning incident on the Southeast Side that left a man with a gunshot wound. Police took Latasha Rena Mosley, 24, to St. Mary's Medical Center after finding her about noon Tuesday in an East Side motel. She had been missing since three men reportedly took her at gunpoint from a residence about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Legislature Drawing Up Compromises

It appears the standoff in the House has fizzled with Republicans coming in to work on bills Tuesday and making no effort to bring up debate on same-sex marriages. But House Republican Leader Brian Bosma said his caucus would still fight on the issue.

Dr. Seuss Is On the Loose Community Leaders Give Kids Taste of `Green Eggs and Ham'

Theodor Geisel has been dead for 13 years. He didn't really like children, but that's pretty irrelevant to them. They know him as Dr. Seuss, author of more than 40 children's books that are read throughout the world.

Uptown Village Project Is in the Works

After beginning the first phase of revitalizing one of Evansville's most distressed neighborhoods, the Washington Court Redevelopment Corp. is about to embark on a second venture -- a commercial development on Riverside Drive. Last year, the group launched the 100 Homes Initiative, a plan to build or renovate 100 homes in a target neighborhood bounded by Sweetser Avenue, Culver Drive, Bellemeade Avenue and Garvin Street.

Clark Field wants to make Indiana's 8th Congressional District his own Field of Green. The 67-year-old political activist, who ran for Congress in a Democratic primary 28 years ago, said he's running this year as a Green Party candidate because neither Democrats nor Republicans are adequately addressing the nation's problems.

East Side Recycle Drop-Off Location Changed to Increase Participation

East Side residents apparently recycle less than others in Evansville, at least among those who don't have curbside pickup in the city. That is the conclusion Vanderburgh County recycling coordinator Jim Daniels reached based on participation in the county Solid Waste Management District's monthly drop-off program.

Veteran Reporter has One More Skill to Teach -- Belching

Herb Marynell of our staff plans to retire soon. That's a shame. He's an excellent reporter -- an ear-to-the- sidewalk guy from the old school of newspapering.
