Going Up? Corn Harvest has Grain Elevators Overflowing
Managers of Illinois grain elevators have an unusual problem this year -- trying to find room for an overflowing corn harvest. An ideal growing season and dry harvesting weather has led to a double whammy of huge yields and trouble-free harvests, said Paul Phelps, location manager for St. Clair Service Co.'s New Athens elevator.

For years, civic leader and horticulture pro Susie Gumberts watched the University of Southern Indiana grow. Soon, she was engulfed in the school, she once said. When it came time to plan her will, she was under some pressure from her son, Alan, to contribute to the University of Michigan, where his father and a sister earned degrees and where one of Susie Gumberts' grandchildren was a student at the time.
Horton Stepping Down at Scripps
Alan M. Horton, who for more than a decade has guided The E. W. Scripps Co.'s daily and community newspapers through a period of rapid change in the media industry, will retire from his role as senior vice president of Scripps newspapers, effective Dec. 31. Horton will cap a newspaper career that began in 1965 when, fresh out of Yale University, he took a job with Scripps as a reporter for The Cincinnati Post. Scripps also is the parent company of the Evansville Courier & Press.
